WHAT WE'RE READING

"Sammy Keyes and the Curse of Moustache Mary" (Ages 10 and older)
by Wendelin Van Draanen
Wendelin Van Draanen's funny, fast-paced girl-detective series hit the ground running with "Sammy Keyes and the Hotel Thief," winner of the 1999 Edgar Allan Poe Award for best children's mystery. We've officially befriended the strong, spunky, skateboarding seventh grader who can't help but plant herself in the middle of trouble. This time, Sammy meets up with an elderly woman named Lucinda Huntley, heir to a Wild West story involving her great-grandmother "Moustache Mary," who came west from Missouri in 1845. When Mary's historic cabin burns to the ground, Sammy wastes no time in plunging headlong into the century-old mystery--and into a few serious scrapes. Read more

"Froggy Goes to Bed" (Ages 2 to 6)
by Jonathan London, illustrated by Frank Remkiewicz
If you've seen Froggy learn to swim, go to school, bake a cake, or get dressed for winter, you know that in his world, nothing is ever easy or efficient, and that everything has its own set of goofy sound effects. This is precisely why preschoolers can't resist these giggle-inducing read-aloud picture books. In "Froggy Goes to Bed," the amiable amphibian is a genius at delaying bedtime. He has to find his toothbrush (in the cookie jar), his boat (in the laundry basket), and his pajamas (behind the desk). Then just one more story, glass of water, and kiss from Mom. Now someone is sound asleep... but it's not Froggy! Read more

"Red Berry Wool" (Ages 4 to 8)
by Robyn Eversole, illustrated by Tim Coffey
Lalo the lamb has sweater envy. Why does the shepherd boy have such a beautiful red wool sweater, when his own wool is straggly, muddy, and full of bits of straw? His mother tells him he must first wash it, then spin it, then dye it, then knit it. Lalo's attempts to do just that are somewhat disastrous, but the boy always seems to show up just in the knick of time. This sweet, clear-as-a-bell story (with endearing, gorgeous illustrations) is a lovely read-aloud choice, and while the lamb never transforms his straggly coat, the ending is as happy as can be. In "Here We All Are," Tomie dePaola's charming sequel to his Newbery Honor-winning "26 Fairmount Avenue"--the affable author-illustrator continues his memoirs of his days as a kindergartner: tap dancing, being demoted from Peter Rabbit to Flopsy in the class play, and waiting for his mom and new baby sister to come home from the hospital.
