"Liberty Heights" (1999) (R) Widescreen Anamorphic
starring Ben Foster, Adrien Brody, and Joe Mantegna; directed by Barry Levinson
Although it quickly disappeared from the box office when released last year, "Liberty Heights" was deservedly one of the most critically acclaimed films of 1999. The latest film in what has casually become known as director Barry Levinson's semi-autobiographical "Baltimore Series" (which also includes "Diner," "Tin Men," and "Avalon"), this exceptional drama shares the same sleeper status as Levinson's "Diner," the first "Baltimore" film which has since gained exalted status as one of Levinson's best. A refreshing change of pace from the typical slate of Hollywood blockbuster wannabes, "Liberty Heights" is a fine film that too many people never heard about. Now's your chance to see what you missed. Read more

"Sweet and Lowdown" (1999) (PG-13) Widescreen
starring Sean Penn and Samantha Morton; directed by Woody Allen
In this Woody Allen comedy set during the post-Depression era when jazz was in full swing, Sean Penn plays Emmett Ray--"the second greatest guitar player in the world"-- whose womanizing ways are tolerated by his mute girlfriend (Samantha Morton, in an Oscar-nominated role), who loves him unconditionally. Uma Thurman plays an aspiring writer who finds Emmett oddly appealing, and as Allen's comedic vignettes unfold, the swinging soundtrack is matched by the film's sumptuous production design and the dazzling work of Chinese cinematographer Zhao Fei. A must for Woody's fans, highlighted by yet another brilliant performance by Penn. Read more

"The Daytrippers" (1997) (R) Widescreen
starring Hope Davis, Stanley Tucci, and Liev Schreiber; directed by Gregg Mottola
One of the best independent comedies of the late 1990s, "The Daytrippers" marked a promising debut for writer-director Gregg Mottola (he has yet to make a second film), and features the wonderful Hope Davis ("Next Stop Wonderland") in her first prominent film role. She plays a suburban housewife who fears that her husband (Stanley Tucci) may be having an affair, and sets out with her dysfunctional family to determine the truth. Great dialogue, likable characters, and a fine ensemble cast (including Parker Posey, Liev Schriber, and Anne Meara) make this a sleeper that's highly recommended. Read more

"Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan" (1982) (PG) Widescreen Anamorphic
starring William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, and Ricardo Montalban; directed by Nicholas Meyer
releases July 11

Hard-core Trekkers still claim this to be the best of all the "Star Trek" feature films, and who's to argue? Reprising the role he played in the original series episode "Space Seed," Ricardo Montalban plays one of Captain Kirk's most challenging foes, chewing the scenery and spouting quotes from "Moby-Dick." Loads of fun, with great special effects in the outer-space equivalent of a submarine chase. Read more
