"Run Lola Run" (1999) (R) VHS
Subtitled or Dubbed
starring Franka Potente; directed by Tom Tykwer
This film is one of last year's best. Lola (Franka Potente) has 20
minutes to raise 100,000 Deutsche marks to save her boyfriend's life.
Thus starts this energetic German film that gives the term "MTV-influenced" a good name. Hip, inventive, and very satisfying, this is a
foreign-language film that deserves a crossover audience.

"Bowfinger" (1999) (PG-13) VHS
starring Steve Martin and Eddie Murphy; directed by Frank Oz
Eddie Murphy is absolutely wonderful playing two roles in this
ebullient comedy about low-budget filmmaking. The title character
(Steve Martin) stumbles upon a quicksilver idea: Try to film the
world's biggest star, Kit Ramsey, without letting him know he's being
filmed. Murphy is ferociously funny as Ramsey and delightful as Kit's
duller brother, Jiffernson, who is hired by Bowfinger to fill in. Just
as fun as Martin and director Frank Oz's previous collaborations,
"Dirty Rotten Scoundrels" and "Houseguest."

"Limbo" (1999) (R) VHS
starring David Strathairn and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio; written and directed by John Sayles
America's purest independent director just keeps making intriguing, no-fat films. The latest from John Sayles ("Lone Star") is about new
beginnings and old pasts coming together in Alaska. A handyman and a
lounge singer start a bumpy relationship in the midst of a town at a
crossroads. Sayles's usual craftsmanship creates a singular blend of
drama and suspense, with an ending designed to ruffle feathers.

"Robocop Collection" (1995) (R) VHS Boxed Set
starring Peter Weller, Robert John Burke, and Nancy Allen
Paul Verhoeven's gleefully wicked sci-fi original spawned two sequels.
All three are available for the first time in years on VHS in this
nicely priced collection. The second in the series deserves another
viewing. As he did with the second "Star Wars" film, director Irvin
Kershner finds new directions for Robocop to go, though it's even more
violent than the first film. Interestingly enough, another actor
(Robert John Burke) took over the lead part in the third film without
much tradeoff; by then Robocop had become a costume instead of an
actor's role.

"The Morph Files, Volumes 1-3" (1995) (NR) VHS
Volume 1
Volume 2
Volume 3
Produced in the early '90s by Aardman Animations (which would later go
on to make the "Wallace and Gromit" films), "The Morph Files" is a
collection of 2- to 10-minute shorts with the red Morph and his
sidekick, Chaz, tooling around their desktop home. They might be trying
to make a garden or simply playing around with a ball. There are a good
deal of shenanigans and whimsical animation that remind one of Tim
Burton's early dabbles, or Looney Tunes. Any fans of "Wallace and
Gromit" or the new film "Chicken Run" will want to add these dandy
videos to their collection. (Ages 4 to adult)
"Dick" (1999) (PG-13) VHS
starring Kirsten Dunst, Michelle Williams, and Dan Hedaya; cowritten and directed by Andrew Fleming
This farce about two bubbleheaded teenage girls who foul up Richard
Nixon's cover-up of Watergate was very underappreciated. A host of
veteran comedians give inspired performances in their send-ups of the
infamous real-life gang, from a bickering Woodward and Bernstein (Will
Ferrell and Bruce McCullough, respectively) to a leering Henry
Kissinger (Saul Rubink). The work of Dan Hedaya (the disgustingly funny
Nick Tortelli from TV's "Cheers") as Nixon is our pick for the best
performance yet of the president under siege.

"Eat Drink Man Woman" (1994) (NR) VHS
starring Sihung Lung; directed by Ang Lee
Delightful drama-comedy of a chef who can only communicate through his
luscious cooking, even though he has lost his sense of taste. We spend
time with his three grown-up daughters as they work through their own
lives as well as the weekly gathering at Dad's. Ang Lee's follow-up to
his breakthrough film "The Wedding Banquet" is even more accessible.
Beware: The shots of food preparation here will make your mouth water;
you must watch his movie with good food at hand.
